Short description: The aim of the course is to learn about the most important unit processes used in the biotechnology industry. The introduction of the issues include the construction and use of various types of bioreactors, characteristic of membrane processes, methods for removing moisture from biological materials, and methods of purification and recovery of products obtained by biological processes.
Full description: Criteria of the bioreactors identity. Characteristic of different types of bioreactors including stirred, packed-bed, air-lift and photo bioreactors. Bioreactors used in Solid-State-Fermentation. Characteristic of the membrane processes including microfiltration, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis. Membranes and membrane modules used in the membrane processes. Methods of the removing water from the biological materials. Ion-exchange and adsorptivechromatography.

Learning outcomes: After completing the course student In terms of knowledge: 1. is able to recognize the basic types of reactors, and describe the basic membrane techniques. He knows how to choose the method to remove moisture from biological materials, 2. can name and describe the biotechnological methods of preparation and purification of cell biomass, primary and secondary metabolites. In terms of skills: 1. knows how to perform the process of breeding, can handle bioreactor membrane processes used in biotechnological processes and can use various methods densification and purification of biological products, 2. knows how to make a device to perform the biotechnological process and draw a line and design technology bioprocess. In terms of social competences: 1. can cooperate actively and creatively in a group.
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: Evaluation of the exercise 50%, evaluation of the lecture 50%
