Short description: The aim of the course is to introduce students with the most important biotechnological methods used in environmental protection. The issues include the problems of use of different microorganisms in wastewater soil, groundwater, exhaust gas and waste liquid and solids from the agriculture and food industry in the processes of aerobic and anaerobic, and the production of biofuels and biopolymers by microorganisms.
Full description: The use of different biotechnological methods in environmental protection (methods of aerobic and anaerobic). Biosorption of heavy metals by plants or micro-organisms and bioleaching. Disposal of industrial and agricultural wastes and their valorisation in valuable products. Bioremediation of soil and groundwater. The production of biofuels.

Learning outcomes: After completing the course student In terms of knowledge: 1. is able to characterize, define and change a potential source of environmental contamination by human and propose biological methods that use in the processes of its treatment, 2. is able to identify, propose and select the biotechnological methods used for disposal of solid and liquid waste can name and explain the method, 3. has general knowledge about. conduct and matching bio-environmental protection. He can search the appropriate group of microorganisms or enzymes to be utilized various chemicals in- situ or ex- situ. In terms of skills: 1. is able to choose and distinguish biotechnological processes used in environmental protection, know how to use and choose the appropriate vaccine microbes for bioremediation - knows the role of microorganisms in circulation elements in nature, 2. can analyze and control the level of chemical pollutants in the environment. Able to verify and assess the threat of living bio-organisms. In terms of social competences: 1. can cooperate actively and creatively in a group, 2. is aware of the responsibility to protect the environment, understand the importance of compliance with the rules of waste segregation.
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: Evaluation of the exercise 50%, evaluation of the lecture 50 %
